Beyond Summer: Fall and Winter at the Beach in Ventura County

Fall and winter in Ventura County bring both bikini weather and sweater weather. There’s always something to do here at the beach.

That’s what I love about fall and winter in Ventura County. The summer crowds have gone home, the air turns crisp, and a beach walk can end with waves crashing beneath a pink sunset. On another afternoon, you might be sitting outside in the sunshine, wondering why you packed so many sweaters.

We host guests throughout the year at Chic Beach Vacations, and I wish more people knew how much there is to enjoy after summer. September and October ease into November and December, bringing holiday outings, meals with family, and plenty of reasons to spend time by the ocean.

Enjoy a quieter fall and winter in Ventura County

One of the pleasures of visiting after summer is how easy an ordinary day can feel.

In my experience, it’s easier to get a favorite table, linger over lunch, and enjoy a conversation with the people who live and work here. The neighborhoods feel less hurried. You can head out for coffee without needing to build the whole morning around it.

Hollywood Beach and Silver Strand in Oxnard, and Pierpont in Ventura, each give you a different place to settle in and explore. Choose a beach neighborhood that suits your plans, then leave some of your days open. A long lunch or an unexpected shop can become the outing you remember.

Beach walks, crashing waves, and pink sunsets

Fall and winter in Ventura County bring some of my favorite evenings at the beach. I love watching the waves roll in as the sky turns pink, then heading home when the air gets chilly.

You don’t have to swim to enjoy a beach vacation. Take a walk, bring your camera, or find a comfortable place to watch the water. On a sunny day, you may want to stay outside all afternoon. On a cooler one, a sweater and a warm drink make a lovely combination.

Pack layers and check the forecast before your visit. We have bright, inviting days throughout the year, along with winter rain and storms. Watch dramatic surf from well back on the dry sand, with plenty of room between you and the waves.

Favorite cafés and an evening out in Ventura

Café Nouveau is one of my favorite recommendations for brunch or lunch. Its beautiful garden dining space makes a meal feel like an outing of its own. Plan a leisurely visit, then decide whether the afternoon calls for downtown shopping or another walk by the beach.

For coffee overlooking the boats, I highly recommend Le Petit Café & Bakery at Ventura Harbor Village. Coffee, something from the bakery, and time beside the water make a simple day feel special. The harbor’s little shops and casual food stops give you plenty to browse afterward.

Prospect Coffee on Laurel Street is another option for a coffee break, with espresso drinks and seasonal specialty beverages.

For the evening, my suggestion at Barrel 33 is pizza, a bottle of wine, and dessert. Perfect. Its cozy wine-bar setting suits the season just as nicely as an outdoor table does on a warmer evening.

Coffee, breakfast, and a neighborhood dinner in Oxnard

In Oxnard, you can build an enjoyable day around the beach and Channel Islands Harbor without a complicated itinerary.

Honey Cup’s Channel Islands Harbor location on Harbor Boulevard is a coffee-and-pastry option to pair with a harbor walk. Hollywood Beach Café is another breakfast or brunch stop to consider before spending time on the sand.

For dinner in Silver Strand, The Strand Bar & Grill is one of my local favorites. I especially like the salmon and bread pudding. It’s the kind of personal recommendation I’m happy to share when guests ask where we would go ourselves.

Get out on the water with Island Packers

The islands and the Santa Barbara Channel add another dimension to fall and winter in Ventura County. A boat trip gives you a fresh view of the coast and a chance to spend part of your visit out on the water.

Island Packers offers island transportation and sightseeing cruises, so you can choose between an island outing and a trip where you remain aboard the boat.

Its Anacapa shoreline cruise runs approximately three to three and a half hours, with year-round departures whose frequency varies by season. It’s an option for seeing island scenery without planning a day of hiking.

Winter whale-watching cruises are listed from December through mid-April, following the gray-whale migration through the channel. These trips also run approximately three to three and a half hours, with booking options from Ventura and Oxnard. Check the current wildlife-cruise schedule for your travel dates.

December is also a good time to watch Island Packers’ holiday-cruise listings. Previous seasons have included harbor lights and caroling outings; check the current offerings before making plans.

Bring a warm layer for the boat. Departures depend on ocean conditions, and wildlife sightings vary from trip to trip. There’s something lovely about setting out across the channel and seeing what the day brings.

Bring your family’s holidays to the beach

A beach house gives you room for the traditions you want to keep and the freedom to start a few new ones.

Make your usual holiday breakfast. Take a beach walk while someone gets dinner started. Gather around the table, then head outside to see what the sunset is doing before dessert.

Our kitchens have serving dishes, roasting pans, and even disposable cooking pans for an easier cleanup. You can make the family favorites without packing every pan from home. If your holiday meal needs a particular piece of equipment, ask our team about the house you’re considering.
