A morning walk beside the ocean. Coffee overlooking the harbor, with your dog settled under the table. An afternoon wandering through little shops before finding somewhere outdoors for dinner.
A dog-friendly Ventura County vacation means beach walks, waterfront cafés, and more time enjoying it all together.
So many of our Chic Beach Vacations guests bring their dogs along. They’re part of the family, and having them with you makes even a simple outing more enjoyable. Between Ventura’s waterfront cafés, downtown shopping, and Oxnard’s beach neighborhoods, there are plenty of ways to spend the day together.
Here are a few of my favorite suggestions.

When you’re staying near the beach, your morning walk becomes part of the vacation.
At Hollywood Beach and Silver Strand in Oxnard, dogs are welcome on the sand before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m., on a leash. That makes these beaches a lovely choice for an early walk before breakfast or an evening outing together. You can find the current details in the Harbor’s beach guide.
There’s something especially nice about starting the day without much of a plan. Take your coffee, follow your dog’s enthusiastic lead, and enjoy being outside by the ocean. Later, you can head back to your beach house for breakfast and decide what sounds good next.
Ventura Harbor Village is one of my favorite recommendations for an easy outing with your dog.
The waterfront promenade, outdoor plazas, little shops, and casual food spots make it a place where you can happily spend an afternoon. Walk beside the boats, browse a few storefronts, and stop whenever something catches your attention.
You don’t need to make a reservation or plan an elaborate lunch. Part of the pleasure is finding a little place to sit outside, ordering something good, and enjoying the water.
When I’ve visited, people have had their dogs resting beneath the café tables while they eat and talk. It feels relaxed and welcoming—the kind of afternoon you hoped you’d have when you packed for your beach vacation.
The Harbor welcomes dogs along its waterfront walking route, with thoughtful touches such as a dog water fountain near Channel Islands Courtyard. Explore its pet-friendly visitor guide for more ideas.
I highly recommend Le Petit Café & Bakery.
This French café has an outdoor patio overlooking the harbor, with coffee, pastries, and meals that give you a good reason to sit and stay awhile.
The setting is a big part of why I like it. You’re outside, the water is right there, and your dog can settle beside you while you enjoy your coffee or lunch.
It’s a lovely stop during a harbor stroll—or a reason to visit all on its own.
Find it: 1591 Spinnaker Drive, Suite 112, Ventura.
For a quick, easy meal, On the Alley offers counter-service breakfast and lunch options, coffee, tacos, burgers, and outdoor tables overlooking the harbor.
It suits the kind of day when everyone wants something a little different and you’d rather keep things casual. Order, find a table, and enjoy the harbor activity around you.
For another afternoon outing, head to downtown Ventura.
Main Street’s pedestrian section, between Figueroa and Fir Streets, creates a welcoming place to walk, browse, and enjoy outdoor dining. It’s part of the city’s Main Street Moves program.
What I like is the variety. There are souvenir shops, thrift stores, pottery, crystals, candles, and little cafés. You might find something for your home, a gift to take back, or simply a good spot to sit and watch the afternoon go by.
With your dog along, this can be an outing at whatever pace suits you. Browse the storefronts, explore the dog-welcoming shops, and stop for a drink or something to eat outdoors.
Leave yourself time to wander. Downtown Ventura is more enjoyable when you aren’t trying to get through it.
Café Nouveau is one of my favorite restaurants, especially for brunch and lunch. Its beautiful outdoor dining space is a big reason why.
The restaurant occupies a Spanish-style bungalow, with a garden patio that feels like a little getaway of its own. Think greenery, an outdoor table, and time to enjoy your meal.
For guests who love a leisurely brunch, this is a place I’d put on the list. Its dog-friendly patio means your companion can join you, too.
Café Nouveau is on Thompson Boulevard, a separate stop from Main Street’s pedestrian shopping area.
Find it: 1497 East Thompson Boulevard, Ventura.
Some evenings don’t need much planning.
At Barrel 33, my suggestion is pizza, a bottle of wine, and dessert. Perfect.
Its private outdoor patio welcomes dogs, and the menu includes thin-crust pizzas and chocolate soufflé, with wines available by the glass or bottle. You can learn more about Barrel 33 through Visit Ventura.
After a day spent walking, shopping, or enjoying the coast, it’s a lovely way to settle in for the evening—with your dog beside you and nowhere else you need to be.
Find it: 1067 East Thompson Boulevard, Ventura.

One of the pleasures of a beach-house vacation is having somewhere comfortable to come back to after your outings.
You can enjoy breakfast at home before heading to the harbor, spend an afternoon exploring downtown, or pick up dinner and settle in for the evening. Your dog gets to be part of those everyday vacation moments, too.
