If your Southern California search began with Malibu, we understand. The cliffs, the coastline, the name: it has earned its place on the wish list. But before you finish planning, come a little farther up the coast. Hollywood Beach, Silver Strand, and Pierpont have a persuasive argument, and it starts with taking your shoes off.

We host in Ventura, Oxnard, and West Malibu, so this is a friendly family rivalry. Here is how to choose the California beach holiday that feels like you.

Malibu: yes, that Malibu

For dramatic coastline and a famous California road trip, Malibu makes a very good entrance. Zuma’s broad beach and the rugged scenery farther west can fill an entire day without much encouragement.

Our West Malibu homes offer a different setting from our Ventura and Oxnard beach neighborhoods. Cloud-Break Ridge has a pool, and the Deer Creek area lends itself to coastal drives and outings. Match the actual house location to your plans: a Malibu mailing address does not put every landmark around the corner.

Ventura County: the beach can be part of the ordinary day

In our Ventura and Oxnard homes, every property is walkable to the beach. That lets you make the sand part of your routine: coffee, a stroll, back for breakfast, and another little outing when someone fancies it.

That is a strong holiday argument. You do not have to appoint a family expedition leader every time someone wants to see the ocean.

Pick your neighborhood, not just the headline

Pierpont in Ventura suits a stay built around the beach with outings to downtown and Ventura Harbor. Think café mornings, small shops, and a waterfront afternoon when you feel like a change.

Hollywood Beach in Oxnard offers beach-house days near the Channel Islands Harbor area. Silver Strand has its own neighborhood feel on the other side of the harbor entrance. Neither requires you to spend the whole holiday following somebody else’s must-see list.

The dog would like a vote

Give lunch the afternoon it deserves

Lisa’s Ventura favorites include Café Nouveau for brunch or lunch in its beautiful garden setting, and Le Petit Café & Bakery at Ventura Harbor for coffee beside the water. For an evening, her Barrel 33 plan is pizza, a bottle of wine, and dessert.

Downtown Ventura adds little shops and cafés to an afternoon browse. In Oxnard, you can pair a harbor outing with a beach day, or make The Strand Bar & Grill the dinner plan. A good holiday does not need to be scheduled down to the last pastry.

And Santa Monica? Another kind of coastal holiday

If the famous pier and a city beach setting are central to your plans, Santa Monica may belong on your list. If you picture a house, shared meals, and days built around a beach neighborhood, look closely at Ventura and Oxnard.

The useful comparison is the holiday you want to have: who is coming, where you will spend your days, and how the house fits your family. The postcard cannot answer those questions for you. We can help.

Malibu can keep the dramatic entrance. Ventura County has a very good case for the extended stay.

Choose Malibu when its particular coastline and outings are the reason for the trip. Choose Ventura or Oxnard when you want beach-house life to be the trip. We are happily biased toward holidays where everyone settles in and starts asking whether they could stay another night.
